Boundaries are not walls
Many people worry that setting a boundary will push others away. In practice, clear boundaries often make relationships feel safer, because everyone knows where they stand. A boundary is simply a way of saying what works for you and what does not.
Why it can feel uncomfortable
If you grew up keeping the peace or putting others first, saying no can bring up guilt or fear. That discomfort does not mean you are doing something wrong. It often means you are doing something new.
Kind and clear can go together
Boundaries can be warm. You might say, “I would love to help, and I can do that on Thursday rather than tonight.” You are honouring the relationship and your own limits at the same time.
A small practice to try
Think of one situation where you often say yes when you mean no. Write a short, gentle sentence you could use next time. Practise it aloud a few times so it feels familiar when the moment comes.
A closing thought
Boundaries are a way of caring for yourself and for the people you love. They take practice, and every small step counts.
